Top Ten Fishing Flies

This is a call to all fishermen that fly fish in New Zealand and Australia. Send us your list of top ten flies with hook sizes so I can add them to this page. The idea is to help visiting anglers so they get a better understanding of what flies to pack in their fly box.

New Zealand NEW ZEALAND'S TONGARIRO RIVER
For winter fishing (June to September) we mainly use Hare and Coppers on a long shank hook size 10 with full length wraps of lead and a 4 mm tungsten bead on a 15ft 6lb flurocarbon leader then a dropper of about 3 foot to a size 14-16 Pheasant Tail / glow bug / prince nymph / or hare and copper, but to the point the flies aren't that important, but the way you present them.

Summer fishing on the other hand is a totally different kettle of fish, fly selection and presentation are very important, fishing long 4lb leaders and light weight nymphs or dry flies.

We use a large selection of dries everything from size 18 Adams right up to size 8 Royal Wulffs and Cicada's depending on the time of season and weather depends on what works. The up side is you can see the fish in summer clear as day, so you can see if they are turning it down or not.

NEW ZEALAND FLY FISHING
For winter fishing we mainly use Hare & Coppers on a long shank 10 with 2 full length wraps of lead and a 4mm tungsten bead on a 15ft 6lb fluoro-carbon leader then a dropper of about 3ft to a size 14-16 pheasant tail / glow bug / prince's nymph or another hare & copper. But to a point the flies aren't as important as they way you present them.

SNOWY MOUNTAINS FLY FISHING FLIES
I mainly fish in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. The Eucumbene River is my main destination. The most useful fly for us in the Eucumbene River is the Royal Wulff in a size 12. It floats well and the boys can see it easily and it works! The trout in the Eucumbene don't seem to be very fussy eaters and there doesn't seem to be big hatches of particular insects that makes them selective.

In mid summer we do get good numbers of grasshoppers and the Royal Wulff seems to work as a grasshopper patters as well. I suspect its success is because it is a good sized meaty chunk that will bring a fish up through a meter or so of fast water as the energy it appears to contain is more than the fish expends in coming to the surface. This is perfect for novices as we fish the fast water where presentation is less important and even if there is no obvious fish activity we still have a good chance of bringing one up.

I also use a Klinkhammer (olive or brown seems best) as sometimes the fish just flash at the dry and don't take it. The emerger is more likely to get a hookup under those circumstances. The bead head is used on a dropper under a Royal Wulff early in the season when the river is up and the fish are lying low. Only my experienced boys can handle casting two flies. I do get them to use a black wooly bugger as a wet cast across and down on occasions but taking fish off the surface is more visually exciting for them.
